5 WAYS TO PROTECT YOUR ROOF DURING STORM SEASON

Posted on 2022-07-15 By Rebecca B. Levy

Florida homeowners are always on the edge of their seats during storm season. We live in an area known for tornadoes and violent storms. Many of us also know that roof damage can be the result of storms.

Although you cannot control what Mother Nature throws at you, there are some things you can do to help protect your roof from storms. These tips can be put into action today.

  1. Rooflines: Trim Trees

Trees are one of the most dangerous threats to your roof. Large branches that fall onto your roof in a storm can cause leaks or other damage. Whole trees could also fall and cause your roof to collapse.

To minimize damage, trim any limbs hanging over your roof or gutters.

  1. Check out the Interior of Your Roof

Inspecting the inside of your roof is one of the most important aspects of roof maintenance. You might not be able to see cracks or holes in your roof from the outside. If it begins affecting your ceiling and walls, you may not even know. You have a bigger problem.

If possible, look inside your roof to inspect it. You should inspect the roof from the inside for signs such as sagging, leaking, and daylight getting through.

3. Keep your Gutters Clean

Your gutters are responsible for directing water away from your home. They must be kept clean to ensure proper drainage. Storms can make this more difficult, as heavy winds can cause gutters to become clogged with leaves, twigs and other debris. If your gutters become blocked, water could settle in areas it shouldn’t.

Clean your gutters every day before the next storm. To ensure that your gutters remain clean and free from debris, make sure you inspect them after each rain.

4. Replacing damaged or missing shingles

Your shingles allow water to flow down your roof, not pool on it. However, shingles that are missing or damaged can cause water damage.

Shingle damage can usually be easily identified. Shingles that are discolored, cracked, warped, broken, missing, or otherwise damaged need to be replaced. It is possible to preserve the integrity of your roof by taking a few steps back.

5. Check your roof after each storm

It is a good idea for you to inspect your roof after each storm. Even small damage to shingles can cause bigger problems in the future. Regular inspections can help prevent costly and time-consuming repairs.

You should also check for shingle damage. Make sure your gutters are securely attached, flashings are free of rust, and shingles have no visible mold. Make sure you inspect for cracks or wear around pipes and vents. For a professional inspection, contact your local roofing company.
