Common Swimming Pool Issues in Ottawa: All You Need to Know

Posted on 2023-04-27 By WebEditor

Most people would agree with the fact that a dive in a swimming pool is highly exhilarating. If you’re in doubt, why don’t you try this during hot days? Owning a pool will give you access to this perk, but a few problems come with it.

Your pool will often require repairs to have it at its optimum performance. While some repairs are easy, and you could easily go with the DIY method, others require professional assistance. Contact professionals like Ottawa pool services for complex plumbing situations. Usually services have vast skills and state-of-the-art equipment for your pool plumbing needs.

Top 4 Swimming Pool Plumbing Woes

Let’s plunge into some problems you’ll face with your pool. These apply to in-ground pool plumbing and above-ground pool plumbing.

#1. Pool Pump Problem

When air is introduced to the pool pump, it obstructs water movement. This condition is referred to as an airlock. It results in water not being filtered, and you end up with a pool full of cloudy and dirty water—Gross!
Moreover, letting the air stay in the system for extended periods will further introduce more significant problems than what you’d be facing. You’ll end up with an overheated pump that will require a replacement because it will be of no value to your pool.
The airlock could also lead to a burst filter task because of built-up pressure within the system. A burst pump will put a dent in your finances to repair it. Hopefully, no one will be in the pool when the burst happens because it is dangerous.

#2. Dirt Buildup

Dirt and debris are aesthetic disasters and mayhem for your pool’s plumbing system. When too much dirt and debris accumulates for an extended period, it might end up in the pool’s filtration system and cause clogs. When small pieces of debris end up in the pool’s plumbing covers and valves, air gets introduced into the system, and the situation we’ve described as an airlock comes to play.
As a precaution, have your pool guests shower before entering the pool to ensure you’re not left with dirt buildup after a great swim. Consider getting a pool net as well. It will help you skim your pool water to get rid of debris.

#3. Changes in Filter Pressure

A decrease or increase in the pool filter’s pressure clearly indicates that something isn’t right with your pool. Here’s why:

  • Filter pressure decreases: This happens when clogs and air are trapped in the system. Wrong pool settings in use can also cause a reduction in filter pressure.
  • Filter pressure increases: This happens when the debris blocks the filter.

Luckily, you can avoid these occurrences and have your pool at its best state by getting it cleaned regularly by a well-known professional plumber.

#4. Leaks

Pool leakage is a pool owner’s worst nightmare. That’s because leakages result in high water bills. However, just like most plumbing problems, if you leave a small leakage unattended, it could worsen and thus cause substantial property damage. As a result, you may need to replace your above-ground plumbing system. You may also need to drain and fix the in-ground pool.

Types of Leaks That Cause Pool Plumbing Problems

Below are the types of leaks that are responsible for pool plumbing problems:

  • Suction Side Air Leak

Whenever there is a leak on the suction side, air enters the pipes when you turn on the pump. Conversely, water leaks out when the pump is off. In most cases, the culprit is the threaded PVC male adapter screwed in front of your pump housing.

You can help correct this temporarily using silicone or pool putty. However, you need to call a professional pool plumber for a permanent solution. A pool repairman cuts out and replaces the faulty lines or fittings.

  • Pressure-Side Return Leak

Pool equipment like the filter, pump, chlorinator, or heater can leak water. Leaks in fittings and pipes connecting the pool with all other pool equipment are often the culprit.

On the pressure side, the frequent pool plumbing leaks are threaded joints or glue joints. This is where PVC female and male connections form.

Unlike suction air leaks, patching pressure-side leak repairs from outside or inside is ineffective. You need to contact a pool service for an effective solution. A professional plumber cuts out and replaces pool equipment.

  • Underground Leakage

It’s common for underground pool pipes to freeze in the winter. These pipes get damaged by settling decks, shifting soils, and tree roots.

Some common signs of frozen pipes include gurgling sounds, physical deformities, or bulges on the lines. You could also see condensation forming on the affected regions of the pipe.

You need to contact a plumber immediately if you notice signs of underground leakage. A professional plumber will perform a leak inspection and provide you with effective repair options.

If you are experiencing plumbing problems with your pool professional plumbers can help you: from leak detection to complete repair.
